An eternity sign — the whirling sun of the old carvers — is cut in a disc at each end of this luxury chess set, between acanthus scrolls at the corners and a basket-weave panel on each side; the 32 pieces are openwork cast bronze. 60 × 60 cm / 23.6″ × 23.6″ open, handmade in Armenia from beech.

This is the wooden chess set with a frame in full relief. The scrolls stand well off a stippled ground, curling in on themselves at the corners and along the ends; the woven panels are cut as strips over and under; the coordinates sit in brass discs beside the inlaid squares. The pieces are cast in openwork bronze with a gold-tone finish on turned bases, pale for one side and dark for the other.

Open it and the inside is carved as a backgammon field, pale points with a spiral sun in each half and a trough down each side, though the set ships with the chess pieces only. It folds on bronze hinges to half its width and goes in the bag.

Are the pieces solid bronze? They are cast bronze, pierced in an openwork pattern with a gold-tone finish, fixed to turned wooden bases — pale for one army, dark for the other — and far heavier than turned wood. The eternity signs, scrolls and weave are cut into the beech in relief on a hand-stippled ground; the squares and points are inlaid. Nothing is printed.

Are backgammon checkers included? No. The set comes with the 32 bronze chess pieces and the bag; the inside is carved as a backgammon field, so checkers and dice of your own make it a two-game board.
