Armenian Backgammon Set - Etchmiadzin Mother Cathedral
Armenians do not really call Etchmiadzin a cathedral — they call her a mother. Mayr Tachar, the Mother Temple, the church every other Armenian church answers to. This hand-carved Armenian backgammon set holds her portrait at the center of the lid, cut in fine relief and framed in patient scrollwork.
Families work the same way. Somewhere there is one table all the others answer to — the one at grandmother's house, where the big holidays happen and the board comes out after dinner. A handmade wooden backgammon board carved with the Mother Cathedral belongs on exactly that table. Inside is a full 23.6" / 60 cm playing field.
