This is the travel chess set that fits in a coat pocket: a real wooden board of 20 × 20 cm / 7.9″ × 7.9″ that folds to 10 × 20 cm, handmade in Armenia from beech, with 32 turned wooden chess pieces and a carrying bag. The frame is plain, with the coordinates cut beside the two-tone squares.

This is the wooden chess set for the glovebox, the rucksack and the desk drawer at work. There is no carving to knock and nothing to fuss over — a walnut-brown frame, pale and dark squares, the coordinates, and bronze hinges with a small catch. Open it on a train table or a café counter and it takes up no more room than a paperback.

Inside, both halves are lined in black felt for the pieces, which are small to match the squares — a few centimetres tall, turned in light and dark wood, 16 a side. The bag takes the closed board. The empty half-hours of a day quietly turn into games.
