A running scroll is carved round the chessboard of this travel chess and backgammon set — a square-edged board with chess outside and backgammon inside. It is 30 × 30 cm / 11.8″ × 11.8″, handmade in Armenia from beech and stained walnut brown, with 32 wooden chess pieces, 32 checkers, a dice set and a black carrying bag.

This is the wooden chess set that looks like a small carved box between games. The scrolls curl one into the next round all four sides, standing off a dotted ground in real relief, and a plain moulded edge finishes the outside. The squares are pale against the dark frame and the coordinates sit beside them.

Open the bronze clasps and there is a wheel ornament with a rayed centre in each half of the backgammon board, with pale arrow-tipped points either side. Checkers in light and dark wood, a dice set and the 32 chess pieces go in the bag. Small enough for a shelf, complete enough for a whole evening.
