Two armies of cast bronze busts — crowned kings and queens, helmeted knights, horse heads, tower rooks — stand on this luxury Armenian chess set, a twelve-sided lattice disc with the coat of arms of Armenia cast in metal at each end. 60 cm / 23.6″ across, handmade in Armenia from dark-stained beech, folding in half, felt inside, bag.

This is the wooden chess set that fills a round table. Twelve straight sides make the disc, the square field sits in the middle with its coordinates on brass discs, and everything outside it is a fine diamond net with a dot punched at every crossing. The arms — eagle and lion holding the shield with Ararat on it — are a small cast disc sunk into a round recess at each end, facing each player.

The pieces are cast in bronze as busts, faces and helmets and manes, each on a turned wooden base, pale for one army and dark for the other, and they weigh what metal weighs. The disc folds on bronze hinges into a half-round that shuts on clasps, both halves lined in black felt for the army.
