Thirty-two ornate cast-metal pieces — one army gold-toned, the other black — stand on the plain pale field of this travel chess set, a natural walnut board with a scalloped edge and a carry handle cut through each end. 40 × 40 cm / 15.7″ × 15.7″ open, handmade in Armenia, with felt inside and a bag.

This is the wooden chess set that keeps its board quiet so the army can talk. The walnut is left pale and unstained, the squares are inlaid in darker walnut and pale maple, the coordinates are cut in line work beside them inside a fine scored border, and the only shaping is the wave of the outline and the two handles. The pieces are cast in openwork metal, small and dense, worked all over with pierced and beaded surfaces — gold on one side, black on the other.

Shut, the handles meet and the board carries like a small case; open it the other way and both halves are lined in black felt for the metal. There is no second game inside, and it closes on bronze hinges and clasps.
