A small solid board rather than a folding one: this chess set is a 25 × 25 cm / 9.8″ × 9.8″ slab with the corners cut off at an angle, a stippled band at each end and a moulded plinth on four feet. Dark-stained wood with inlaid pale squares, handmade in Armenia, with 32 turned pieces and a bag.

Nothing on this wooden chess set competes with the squares — inlaid pale and brown wood inside a thin border with the coordinates cut in, the two end bands punched by hand, the canted corners echoed in the plinth below. It stands a finger's width off the table on its feet, flat and steady, with no hinge line across the field.

The pieces are turned in pale and dark-stained wood and scaled to the small squares, so the whole set sits on a desk corner or a café table without crowding it. Between games they go in the bag; the board stays out.
