Carved as a medieval castle, this luxury chess set with storage has brick-textured walls, round turrets at the corners, bronze figures standing in its arches and three lined drawers for the 32 bronze pieces. It measures 60 × 60 × 24 cm / 23.6″ × 23.6″ × 9.4″, and is handmade in Armenia from beech.

This is the wooden chess set that decides which room it lives in. The top edge is castellated, the walls are cut brick by brick, columns and arched niches run round all four sides with cast bronze guards and horsemen standing in them, and a bronze king and queen hold court on a pedestal at the front. The whole fortress rests on four ornate brass feet.

The pieces are bronze too — mounted knights, foot soldiers, tower rooks — and the drawers at the front and both sides, lined in black, take the captured ones as the game goes on. Nothing piles up round the board. The chess set with drawers for the study that needed one commanding object.
