The frame of this chess set with storage waves on all four sides, carved with leaf scrolls and a flower at the centre of each edge, round an inlaid field with a felt-lined drawer beneath for the 32 wooden pieces. It is 50 × 50 × 11 cm / 19.6″ × 19.6″ × 4.3″, handmade in Armenia from beech.

A wooden chess set with shape to it. The scallop runs along the top edge and again along the bottom of the apron, so the board sits on four shaped feet with a curved skirt between them. The leaf scrolls curl towards each corner over a dotted ground, the coordinates are carved pale into the border beside the squares, and the sides are worked in a fine lattice with a flower on each face.

The drawer slides out from the front and holds all 32 pieces — turned in light and dark wood, 16 a side — on felt, so the board stays set on the table and the game is never more than a pull away. At 50 cm it is the size most rooms have space for.
