A carved rope border runs round the chessboard of this travel chess set, with a cut-out carry handle at each end and a lining of black felt inside. It is 40 × 40 cm / 15.7″ × 15.7″, handmade in Armenia from beech in a light natural finish, with 32 wooden chess pieces and a carrying bag.

This is the wooden chess set that is easiest to live with: a pale, quiet board that suits a modern flat as well as a farmhouse. The rope is carved as an interlaced band with leaf work behind it, set between two plain lines, and the coordinates are cut beside the squares. The edge curves in and out along each side and the handle is part of the board itself.

Open the bronze clasps and both halves are lined in black felt, so the 32 pieces — turned in light and dark wood, the knights with carved heads — travel in silence. A board for the weekend bag, the office drawer and the grandparents' table.
