A dark walnut board with a frame stippled all over by hand, a scalloped edge and a carry handle cut through each end — and on it, 32 ornate cast-metal pieces, one army gold-toned, the other black. This travel chess set is 40 × 40 cm / 15.7″ × 15.7″ open, handmade in Armenia, with felt inside and a bag.

This is the wooden chess set where the frame is texture and the army is the pattern. The whole border is a pebbled ground of small punches under a smooth moulded lip that waves in and out on every side, and the field inside it is plain inlaid squares in walnut and maple. The pieces are cast in openwork metal, small and dense, worked all over with pierced and beaded surfaces, gold on one side and black on the other.

Closed, the two handles line up and the board carries like a small dark case; opened the other way, each half is a well of felt where the metal army lies between games. There is no second field under the lid, and the bronze hinges and clasps take the fold and the close.
