The raised frame of this chess set with storage is carved with a diamond lattice above a beaded edge, and a front drawer takes all 32 wooden pieces. The board is 50 × 50 × 11 cm / 19.6″ × 19.6″ × 4.3″, handmade in Armenia from beech and walnut, and stands on four feet.

This is the wooden chess set that tidies itself. The frame stands proud of the squares, so the field sits inside it like a tray; a fine lattice runs round it with the coordinates on small brass studs, a row of carved beads finishes the lip, and the sides are worked in a dense texture down to the feet. The squares are inlaid in two woods.

Pull the drawer on its brass pendant and the pieces — turned in light and dark wood, 16 a side — go back under the board in one movement. What stays on the table is a carved box, not a half-cleared game. A chess set with drawers for a side table, a desk or a shelf.
