Scrolling leaf-work is carved over the wide frame of this luxury chess set, corner to mitred corner, above an apron of heart-shaped scrolls and four cast brass feet; the 32 pieces are openwork cast metal, one army silver, one gold. 40 × 40 cm / 15.7″ × 15.7″, 10 cm high, handmade in Armenia from beech and walnut.

This is the wooden chess set that sits like a small piece of furniture. The frame is wide and every inch of it is cut — a running scroll of leaves and tendrils in relief, mitred at the corners — and the sides carry a second band of hearts and scrolls above the feet. The squares are inlaid walnut and pale wood with the coordinates in brass discs, and the pieces are pierced right through, so light passes between the scrolls of every body.

Rooks are brick towers, knights are horse heads, and each army has its own metal — one bright silver, one warm gold — small enough to suit the field and heavy enough to sit still on it. A bag is included for the pieces.
