This is the wooden chess set that sits like a small chest on the table. The lattice is cut in a fine diamond net round the field, a run of beads follows the outer moulding, and the coordinates sit on brass discs beside the inlaid pale and brown squares. The pieces are cast bronze pierced right through — crowns, horse heads and tower tops on filigree bodies — each fixed to a turned wooden base, pale for one army and dark for the other.

Under it all are four cast brass feet in a scrolled pattern; they lift the box off the table so the moulding reads from the side, and they keep a board this dense exactly where it was put. A small set in footprint, a heavy one in the hand — the bag is for carrying the pieces.
