A border of pointed arches, each holding a carved fleur-de-lis, frames the chessboard of this chess set on a square-edged board. It is 50 × 50 cm / 19.6″ × 19.6″, handmade in Armenia from beech and stained walnut brown, with 32 wooden chess pieces in a fitted tray and a carrying bag.

This is the wooden chess set for a full-size game with a Gothic edge. The arches run in an unbroken arcade round all four sides, cut in deep relief over a dotted ground, with a lily standing in every one, and the coordinates sit in the flat band beside the squares. The edges are straight and moulded, so it lies flat and square on the table.

Open the bronze clasps and every one of the 32 pieces has its own slot in a black fitted tray in one half; the other half is a plain tray. The pieces are turned in light and dark wood. For the player who wants room to think and a frame worth looking at while the other side does.
