The dark squares and the wide frame are grey-black marble with pale veins running through them; the light squares are white stone, and a thin band of lighter marble separates the field from the frame. Small brass fleur-de-lis studs sit at every coordinate, and the pieces are openwork bronze — crowned kings, horse-head knights — each on a polished marble base.
