Leafy Tree of Life Armenian Backgammon Set, 4 Sizes — Handmade in Armenia

Hundreds of small leaves make the canopy of this tree of life, a twisting trunk beneath and a tangle of roots below, all in pale wood on the dark disc of this Armenian backgammon set, framed by a stepped cartouche and a diamond-lattice border. Four sizes, 30 to 60 cm square (11.8″ to 23.6″), handmade in Armenia.

Its underside is not left bare either — squares of pale and dark wood are inlaid there as a panel, inside the same stepped frame and lattice edge.

Open, each half holds an inlaid knotwork roundel between fleur-tipped pale points, with a trough along each rail for the checkers and brass-toned hinges; turned checkers in two woods, white dice and the black carrying bag are all photographed.

Which tree board is this? The one with the leafy, rounded canopy and a twisting trunk — the other two tree boards have flame-shaped branches or a crown held in a ring. One board was photographed for all four sizes and the design is the same at each; only the 30 cm board is a true travel size. Checkers, dice and the bag are photographed with it.
