Stitched Flowers Armenian Backgammon Set, 4 Sizes — Handmade in Armenia

Pale flowers, eight-point stars and stepped diamonds crowd a dark disc on this Armenian backgammon set, laid out like a cross-stitch panel round a large central blossom, the disc rimmed in pale wood and set in a stepped cartouche with a diamond-lattice border. Four sizes, 30 to 60 cm square (11.8″ to 23.6″), handmade in Armenia.

Turn it over for the second face — the same lattice ends and stepped frame, now holding an inlaid chequered panel of pale and dark squares.

The playing side carries a pale inlaid knotwork roundel in each half between fleur-tipped inlaid points, a trough for the checkers along each rail and brass-toned hinges. Turned checkers in two woods, white dice and the black carrying bag are all photographed.

What is the 'unique ornament'? A disc of stitched-looking flowers and stars, pale on dark, round a central blossom — the old copy never described it. One board was photographed for all four sizes and the design is the same at each; only the 30 cm board is a true travel size. Checkers, dice and the bag are photographed with it.
