No carving at all on this classic wooden backgammon set: one outer face is plain dark-stained wood, polished so the grain shows through, the other carries an inlaid chequered panel of pale and dark squares, and the straight-edged case closes on two small clasps. 60 × 60 cm / 23.6″ open, handmade in Armenia.

This is the board for the other mood — the one that goes with a plain oak table and white walls, or lives on a bookshelf without asking for attention. The stain is a deep red-brown and the grain runs across both faces in long rays; there is nothing to catch dust and nothing to argue with the rest of the room.

Open it and the inside is just as plain: drop-shaped points incised into each half, troughs along the rails for the checkers with a round dice cup let into each side rail, and two small hinges on the spine. It comes with 32 wooden checkers and a dice set, and every checker glides on the flat wood.
