Pale leaves and curling tendrils radiate from the centre of a dark disc on this Armenian backgammon set, the disc held in a stepped cartouche between two stippled panels, with a diamond lattice running round the lid as a border. Four sizes, 30 to 60 cm square (11.8″ to 23.6″), handmade in Armenia.

Turned over, the wooden backgammon set keeps its lattice border and stepped frame but fills the centre with an inlaid chequered panel of pale and dark squares.

Open, a pale knotwork roundel is inlaid in each half between fleur-tipped inlaid points, with a checker trough along each rail and brass-toned hinges; the turned checkers in two woods, the white dice and the black carrying bag are all in the photographs.

What exactly is the ornament? A single round disc of scrolling leaves and tendrils in pale wood on a dark ground — the old copy said only 'carved ornaments'. The photographs show one board and the design is the same at every size; only the 30 cm board is a true travel size. Checkers, dice and the bag are photographed with it.
