Armenian Backgammon Set - Landmarks of Artsakh
Two carvings, side by side, and between them they cover everything. On one half of this handmade Armenian backgammon set the stone elders of the "We Are Our Mountains" monument look out of their frame; on the other, a historic church stands with its cone-topped drum and its plain, certain walls. Արցախ is lettered between them and carved scrollwork ties the two together across the lid.
People and prayer — that is the pairing, and it is the one Armenians reach for whenever they are asked to sum a place up. Nothing here is loud about it. Open the clasps, let the bronze hinges swing back, and the full 23.6" / 60 cm playing field is where the board stops being a keepsake and starts being furniture: dice, checkers, somebody insisting they were robbed. Carry this hand-carved wooden backgammon board in by its cut-out handle, and let the lid say what it says quietly while the game gets on with being a game.
