Pale wood against dark: the coat of arms of Armenia is inlaid, not carved, at the centre of this Armenian backgammon set — eagle and lion holding the quartered shield with Ararat and the ark, the sword, chain, wheat and ribbon beneath — inside a rope-bordered roundel on a lid cut with a diamond lattice and stippled lobed panels. A cut-out carry handle runs through the top edge of each half. 60 × 60 cm / 23.6″ × 23.6″ open, handmade in Armenia.

Round the back the lattice continues in the lobed panels, with a chequered panel of pale and dark squares inlaid flush between them.

Open the board and the arms are inlaid again in pale wood at the centre of each half, one set facing each player, between fleur-tipped inlaid points; side grips, corner dice recesses and brass-toned hinges. Thirty-two beech and walnut checkers and dice are included.

Good to Know Before You Buy

Is the coat of arms bronze? No — the old title and copy said bronze, but the emblem in the photos is a pale wood inlay with the detail drawn in fine line; there is no metal on the lid. The old copy also listed a carrying bag that is not photographed, so it is not included here.

How do I look after it? Wipe the inlaid faces with a dry cloth and brush the lattice with a soft dry brush. Keep the board out of direct sun and store it closed with the checkers inside.
