Armenian Backgammon Set - Pomegranate in Bronze
Armenians give pomegranates the way other people give flowers, and for the same reason: it is a wish, not a decoration. On this handmade Armenian backgammon set the fruit sits at the centre of the lid in bronze and carved wood, split just enough to show what it is famous for, with a smaller bronze pomegranate set either side of it. The whole field behind them is hand-cut into fine cross-hatching, so the metal is the only thing on the board that catches light.
What the symbol actually means is plenty — a full house, a full table, more than enough to go round. Which makes it a slightly funny thing to put on a game where the entire object is to take everything and leave your opponent with nothing. Open the clasps, let the bronze hinges swing back, and the full 23.6" / 60 cm playing field settles that contradiction the honest way.
